What Your Company Needs to Know
The Covid-19 virus continues to impact the business sector globally, and companies remain faced with challenges and the need to adapt to an ever-evolving reality. In this regard, it is important for businesses to maintain a clear understanding of the procedures and health measures to be taken in cases involving workers with Covid-19.
In Panama, Executive Decree No. 64 of November 30, 2023, issued by the Ministry of Health, remains in force. This decree establishes the actions to be followed to reduce the risk of spreading the virus, as detailed below:
In the case of individuals testing positive for Covid-19, a seven (7) day isolation period is recommended. No test is required on the seventh day, and individuals may return to their daily activities on the eighth day.
Even if the worker retains a positive laboratory result, they must visit a Health Center or a Private Clinic so that a licensed physician can assess them, prescribe the appropriate treatment, and determine the exact seven (7) day isolation period, which starts from the first day of symptoms—not the date of the lab result. The physician will issue the corresponding medical leave certificate, which must be submitted to the employer upon the employee’s return to work.
In cases of close contact or exposure to a confirmed Covid-19 case, if the individual remains asymptomatic, neither an antigen test nor a quarantine period is required.
In both cases—confirmed Covid-19 patients or close contacts—the use of face masks is recommended for a period of 10 days.
As of today, Panama’s Ministry of Health reports over 2,000 active positive Covid-19 cases. It is therefore essential that companies keep personnel informed about the rising number of cases, encourage frequent handwashing, and suggest completing the full vaccination schedule.
