Interview to Joaquin De Obarrio, associate and member of the Board of Directors of the Panama Maritime Law Association, in the Seatrade Maritime Special Publication "Panama Maritime Review 2020/2021”.


The article highlights the role of Panamanian lawyers within the global maritime industry, the challenges, modernization of the admiralty jurisdiction, and complexities of the world´s first register.


‘I am proud to say our team recently was party to the first ever virtual hearing before the Maritime Court of Appeals. This technology, which has also been implemented by the first instance courts, will allow our admiralty jurisdiction to continue operating even in adverse circumstances such as the current pandemic. It also allows foreign legal experts and others to participate remotely when the substantive law of the matter requires it.’


‘The Key issues for the legal sector, currently include digitalisation and simplification of processes. The complexities brought forth by the pandemic require innovative solutions that must be reached through the open communication between the public and private sectors,’ emphasises De Obarrio.
